Seasonal race recommendations from you!
Looking for you to share your favourite race(s)! An example from my Buckin' Hell experience
It’s time for another community callout friends. I’ve had such a great time hearing from all of you for past posts and I’m excited about this particular post because we can do it each season!
Race Recommendations
I’d like to hear from you about races that you have run and enjoyed during the past few months. This will be a great way to read about races from all over, and perhaps discover some new ones! You can simply fill out this google form to submit the race you want to highlight. I’m going to collect these for the entire month of August and the post will go up in September, and we can do this every 3 or 4 months! I’ll highlight all of the great submissions and we can all add to our calendars. I’m highlighting Buckin’ Hell in this post because I loved it and thought it would give an example of what a response might look like.

Buckin’ Hell - 50k, 50k relay, 35k
Adam Lee is from Vancouver, BC in Canada, and has been trail running for 8 years. He “trained” on and off with his partner Chris Shier for about 3 months getting ready for the Buckin Hell 50k relay, which takes place in July on Mt. Seymour in BC, Canada.
The 50k relay was a blast and started at 7:30am, after the 50k start had started and before the 35k start. The start/finish line was really well organized, including a drop bag area for those using them, and registration was a breeze. The mountain top offered up more bugs than any of us wanted to see in the morning, but thankfully weren’t as bad as the day grew hotter and the start line turned to the finish line.
Buckin' Hell has been an event since 2013. Geoff Langford and Gary Robbins are the race directors for Coast Mountain Trail Running. The RD's do a great job as this series has been running for a while, and they are a well-oiled machine at this point. Course markings are top notch and so are the aid stations. Volunteers know what they are doing and the aid stations offer up typical aid station staples. The entire race day experience is fun when you run these races! They also have tons of draw prizes and the finishing medal is a bottle opener too.
Great photos
The photographers do a great job of capturing us enjoying these experiences as well. Scott Robarts and Ty Holtan do an amazing job of getting those snaps. You have the enjoyment of reliving the weekend as you scroll through both of their pages when they release the photos a few days later.
The relay is fun as one runner is tasked with running down the mountain and the other runs back up. I had the pleasure of descending and it was a quad-busting great time. CBC is an amazing trail and it's so cool that it's part of the race. In the second half of the relay, my partner Chris had to deal with one last climb, that most runners were complaining about at the finish line, because it was difficult and went on and on. It was pretty much exactly what we'd expect from a Coast Mountain race :)
We paid $199 CAD for the relay entry (2 people), taxes and fees included. The entire series is worth your time, but FWIW, Gary mentioned that this course is the toughest 50k they run. This course is no joke, and Mt. Seymour is my favourite mountain to run on the north shore.
